Welcome

I’m a small-time homesteader living in Upstate New York. After many years spent in cities and villages, we are currently living in a log cabin while we build our forever home. Our life is both the same and very different from what it once was.

Writing has been a hobby off and on for my entire life. Years ago, I wrote a humor blog called The Lower Crust under the moniker ‘Attempted Blogger.’ The posts covered TV, pizza, and Lifetime Movies. It was something I did purely for fun; My only claim to fame was once having an article retweeted by the actors from The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

I started a diary in spring of 2020 to document life during the pandemic. In late 2020 and 2021 I had a series of very difficult personal experiences and decided to revive The Lower Crust, hoping to recapture some of the fun I had with that project. But as they say, you write what you know, and my essays ended up being about life, death, identity… all the subjects that come into focus when you are living in nature with some additional time on your hands.

The first serious essay I published was about deciding to have a child at the age of 37 and then losing my first pregnancy. I reeled from that experience for many months; writing became a kind of therapy, a way to both understand and communicate to others what felt impossible to say out loud. In the second year of the pandemic I experienced a streak of nearly-unbelievable bad luck, an experience I documented here.

These days I write about life as it comes: living in a remote cabin, accepting the challenges of caring for animals, and reconsidering the concept of identity after periods of great change.

I have collected these here as Changing Seasons.

I hope you enjoy these essays.
